MultitaskingThere are four features on the iPad I think are very cool. Those features are the ability to grab multiple apps and move those apps quickly, and the ability to multitask using Slide Over and Split Screen. The video below will show you some the quickest way to move apps on your iOS device and the GIFs will demonstrate Slide Over, Split Screen, and Multitasking. 9to5 Mac - iPhone app icon management tips
|
This video is great for showing the basics and some of the basics on steroids. I’ve listed my favorite topics in this video and the time they are discussed. If you know the basics about moving apps or putting apps in folder than skip most of the video and definitely watch the four underlined sections.

Slide Over
Slide Over brings a beneficial power to the iPad. With Slide Over you can quickly run two apps at the same time and interact with both of them. This is a nice benefit when trying to Zoom and use a secondary app.
To get started with Slide Over, open an app and bring up the Dock by SLIDING UP from the bottom of the iPad screen. Go slow or you will close the app you currently have open. From the Dock, PRESS AN APP until it seems to jump off the dock. SLIDE THE APP to the left or right on top of the app that is already open. Now you can easily switch between the app that is open and the app floating on top that is currently open. This works great for taking notes while on a website.
If you need to move the app because it is in the way, SLIDE the app off the screen or move the app to the other side. To start, PULL DOWN from the top of the app, you will see a short line, and move the app where you need it. If the SLIDE OVER app is off the screen and you need the app again, PULL IT BACK from where you slid it off the screen. Most apps work with Slide Over. If you need to totally close an app or switch between multiple apps that might be open in Slide Over, you will see a long line, SLIDE up from the bottom of the app open in Slide Over. The Slide Over app will get a little smaller and you can PUSH it up and off the screen or sort through open apps to find the one you need. To use Multitasking, I pulled pictures from both my Photos and a Safari Search into Notes. To move images, find the item you’d like to copy, PRESS & HOLD like you are moving an app on your home screen, BRING the Slide Over back onto the screen by SWIPING IN from the right with your other hand, and drag your selected image into the open Slide Over app. You can also grab multiple images by selecting one image until it pops out and then tap other images so they group together. Finally, DRAG THE IMAGES into the app you’re using for Slide Over to add them to the document or note. This also works great for iWork apps like Pages or Keynote. |
Split Screen
Split Screen brings true power to the iPad and the Safari browser. With Split Screen you can have two apps or two instances of the same app running side-by-side and work with both apps.
In the first instance, I have the Unsplash app open and I've opened the Pages app. From here I dragged an image from Unsplash to Pages. To get started, OPEN an app. To start Split Screen, SLOWLY SLIDE your finger from the bottom of the screen to reveal the dock. From the dock, PRESS AN APP until it seems to jump off the dock. SLIDE THE APP to the right of the app that is already open until you see the open app slide over to make room. To move an image from Unsplash to Pages PRESS & HOLD until the image moves a bit and slide it onto Pages.
Like with Unsplash, when you have Safari and Pages open together in Split Screen you can copy text from Safari and paste it into Pages very easily. To move text from Safari to Pages HIGHLIGHT the text you want to copy and SLIDE it onto Pages. Not only can you have two apps open but you can have two instances of Safari running simultaneously. This can be a benefit when trying to compare information or research. When you run two instances of Safari it doesn't open a new tab it's a whole new instance of Safari that needs to be closed. Similar to moving one image from one app to another, you can move multiple images at one time from one app to another. To move multiple images, open Photos (for example) and use Split Screen to open another app, like Pages. SELECT multiple photos from either Photos or a search engine, like Google, and DRAG the images into the second open app. In Pages, the images will come in all on top of one another and you will have to move them around the screen and resize them to fit your formatting. If you move multiple images from an app like Photos or from a search engine, like Google, into a second app, like Notes, the images will drop in like a list instead of on top of one another. Since Notes is more of a repository of information rather than a design app like Pages the images drop in differently based the amount of customization you have within an app. Finally, you can combine Split Screen and Slide Over and use it in the same instance. START Split Screen first with two apps. Next, ADD a third app from the dock and SLIDE IT OVER ON TOP of the apps already open. If you would like to replace the Slide Over app with either of the apps in Split Screen, simply DRAG the Slide Over app into one of the placeholders. You can quickly and easily switch apps between Split Screen and Slide Over by PULLING DOWN from the top of an app and moving it where you need it. |
